On April 8, 1944, a B-24 Liberator Bomber (41-28983) took off from Topeka Army Air Field in Kansas. The B-24, and its crew of ten men of the United States Army Air Corps, were bound for Morrison Field in West Palm Beach, Florida. Morrison Field was a staging base for the theaters of war. After a stopover, the B-24 Liberator Bomber and its crew of ten men would have been en route to Europe via the South Atlantic Ferry Route to join the Allied effort to defeat the Nazi war machine. Shortly after takeoff, the B-24 crashed in the Shelby County, Millington, Tennessee area in the vicinity of the Chickasaw Ordnance Works. Nine men were killed, and one man, Sgt. Richard H. Martin Jr. from Lynchburg, Virginia, parachuted to safety and survived the crash. He was admitted to Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The nine men who perished in the crash are listed as official casualties of World War II, having died in the service of their country. |
From the Newspaper: The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Sunday, April 9, 1944 "Exploding in midair with a force that tore it into three pieces, a B-24 Army Liberator carried nine of its crew members to death yesterday morning as it disintegrated over a two mile area just west of the Chickasaw Ordnance Works near Millington." |
My uncle, S/Sgt Albert S. Dold, was one of the men killed in the crash on Saturday, April 8, 1944, which was the day before Easter Sunday. I've been researching him and the rest of the ill-fated B-24 Crew for a few years. I am looking for relatives, of the crew, who are willing to share their memories with me. But, it's been very difficult to locate any of the relatives of the crew. Their parents are long deceased, and if any of the men were not fathers, there are no sons and daughters, another one of the tragedies of war. Including my uncle, I have located relatives of Lawson Chitester, Edward Kowalonek, Leonard Marcus, Augustine Perrotti, James Simmons, Paul Dean Snedigar, and James F. Sutherland Jr., but, I am still searching for relatives and friends of the other crew members: Robert H. Christy and Richard H. Martin Jr.. |
So, I'm relying on other relatives, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and in-laws, to further my research. This is the new millennium, and I would like to think that these men, as well as all the other members of the armed services who have given their lives in the service of their country, as well as those who were fortunate to return home from war, have not been forgotten by this generation. |

Seven months after his death, on November 5, 1944, S/SGT ALBERT S. DOLD's first cousin, PFC JOHN EMIL PARKER, 104th Infantry Division (Timberwolves) was killed in action in Holland. JOHN EMIL PARKER was the son of John and Eleanore Parker of 30 Doncaster Street, Roslindale, Massachusetts. John Emil Parker's parents were notified of his death on Thanksgiving Day, 1944. John's only brother, Paul E. Parker, died on November 6, 1998, 54 years plus a day, to the day that his brother John was killed in action. During their youth, Albert and John grew up together while living mere streets apart in Roslindale, Massachusetts. Now, eternally in youth, they rest mere rows apart in Mount Hope Cemetery in Boston. Their names, along with countless numbers of other veterans, are etched in stone forever. |

The following picture is my uncle, S/SGT ALBERT STEPHEN DOLD. ALBERT is the brother of ANNA, ELEANOR, WILLIAM JR. (my dad), EMMA, and HENRIETTA, who was affectionately known as DOLLY. At the time of his death, his parents, my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Dold Sr. lived at 3 Sheldon Street, Roslindale, Massachusetts. Adding to the tragedy of his death was that ALBERT died on his sister HENRIETTA'S wedding day. Also, Albert's brother, William Dold Jr. was in Italy with the 36th Infantry Division, 111th Combat Engineers Battalion under the command of General Mark Clark. He didn't learn of the death of his brother, Albert, until he returned home from the war. |

This B-24 Liberator Web Page Tribute downloads with a musical theme and background sound. In other words, and on most current browsers, it plays two sounds simultaneously, and adapts best with Windows Media Player. If you are using Windows Media Player, and the media icons appear below, the top media icon controls the sound of the roar of the B-24 taking off in the background, and the bottom media icon controls the main musical theme. Please turn on your speakers if you would like to hear the musical theme and the background sound. If you would like to hear the Musical Theme Tribute without the B-24 Takeoff Roar in the background, and you have access to the media icons, turn off which one you don't want to hear. If you have any technical problems please let me know. Thank you. |
